Zuma’s endorsement and subsequent assumption of leadership within the MKP significantly impacted the ANC’s electoral performance. In the recent elections held on 29 May, the ANC secured only 40% of the national vote, while Zuma’s newly formed MKP achieved a notable 14%, reflecting a substantial defection of support from the ANC.
The expulsion follows disciplinary charges levelled against Zuma for collaborating with a rival political entity and for joining another political party contrary to ANC regulations. The ANC disciplinary hearings were conducted virtually, in response to the constraints imposed by recent developments. According to a leaked document from the ANC’s National Disciplinary Committee, Zuma was found guilty of multiple contraventions of the party constitution.
Zuma now faces a 21-day period during which he may appeal the decision before the National Disciplinary Committee of Appeal. The expulsion decision has elicited strong reactions within the party, with some members viewing it as a necessary measure for the party’s integrity.
Snuki Zikalala, President of the ANC Veterans’ League, characterised Zuma’s expulsion as a “long overdue” action that is beneficial both for the party and for South African society at large. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Zikalala emphasised that Zuma’s actions, including his establishment of the MKP and claims of continued ANC membership, were contrary to the party’s constitutional principles. “He has worked against the ANC, established his own party, and managed to deceive more than two million people by saying he is still a member of the ANC. We welcome the decision to expel him and say if he wants to appeal, let him appeal,” Zikalala stated.
The ANC’s decision reflects a broader struggle within the party as it contends with internal dissent and the challenge posed by emerging political alternatives. The MKP’s unexpected success in the recent elections demonstrates a shifting allegiance among voters and suggests a potentially fractious political future for the ANC.
As the political landscape evolves, all eyes will be on Zuma’s next moves and the ANC’s efforts to reclaim its position in South Africa’s political sphere. The outcome of Zuma’s appeal could further influence the party’s strategy and cohesion moving forward.
