Ramaphosa Accuses Democratic Alliance of Jeopardising GNU Negotiations

President Cyril Ramaphosa has criticised the Democratic Alliance (DA), accusing the opposition party of undermining the foundation of the Government of National Unity (GNU) negotiations. This comes as the discussions between the African National Congress (ANC) and the DA reportedly hit a stalemate over the Department of Trade and Industry portfolio.

In a final written communication to DA leader John Steenhuisen, Ramaphosa expressed his frustration, alleging that the DA has been “shifting goalposts” by demanding two additional Cabinet portfolios, bringing their total to eight.

The GNU negotiations have seen heightened tensions, with the ANC proposing to allocate six Cabinet Ministers and seven deputy ministers to the DA. However, the DA has rejected this offer, maintaining their insistence on critical economic ministries, including governance, social protection, communications, and internal relations. The DA also seeks the Deputy President position or the Minister in the Presidency role.

President Ramaphosa’s comments come as the DA is set to hold a Special Federal Executive (Fedex) meeting later today to deliberate on the ANC’s latest proposal. The outcome of this meeting could determine whether the DA continues with the GNU discussions or decides to withdraw altogether.

DA Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille has previously communicated to ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, reiterating the party’s demands for key economic portfolios and high-ranking positions. This stance has seemingly contributed to the current impasse.

In an effort to resolve the deadlock, DA leader John Steenhuisen held a one-on-one meeting with President Ramaphosa earlier this week. Despite these efforts, a conclusive agreement remains elusive.

As the negotiations progress, the potential impact on South Africa’s political landscape remains uncertain, with both parties standing firm on their respective demands. The outcome of the DA’s Fedex meeting is anticipated to be a crucial determinant in the future of the GNU.
