During his traditional Easter message, Pope Francis appealed for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. The 87-year-old pontiff delivered Easter Mass at the Vatican despite health concerns, addressing thousands of worshippers.
Referring to global conflicts, the Pope emphasized the importance of avoiding violence and instead advocated for peace through dialogue and compassion. He expressed concern for civilians affected by war, particularly children, denouncing the suffering and destruction caused by armed conflict.
Pope Francis also called for countries to refrain from re-arming and addressed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, urging respect for international law and advocating for a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine.
The war in Gaza erupted following an attack by Hamas on southern Israel, leading to retaliatory measures by Israel. Since then, casualties have risen on both sides, with significant human suffering. Easter Sunday holds significant importance in the Catholic calendar, observed by billions worldwide. Despite health challenges, Pope Francis participated in Easter Mass, receiving assistance as he greeted cardinals.
