The 10th Mining Expo and Conference in Namibia opened its doors on Wednesday in Windhoek, the country’s capital, with a compelling focus on Namibia’s pivotal role in providing sustainable minerals to support the ongoing global energy transition. The two-day event, under the theme “Namibia’s Role in the Sustainable Supply of Minerals to Support the Global Energy Transition,” has garnered remarkable attention, showcasing the nation’s commitment to responsible mining and its contribution to a cleaner energy future.
With an impressive increase in participation compared to the previous year, the event has drawn 164 exhibitors occupying 268 booths, a surge of 59.2 percent in exhibitors and 64.4 percent in booth uptake, as proudly announced by Zebra Kasete, the president of the Chamber of Mines of Namibia. Kasete emphasized the event’s significance in illuminating Namibia’s integral part in the global shift towards cleaner energy sources.
In his keynote address at the opening ceremony, Namibia’s Vice President, Nangolo Mbumba, highlighted the vital role that exploration and mining play in bolstering Namibia’s economy. Mbumba noted that as the world seeks to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources to combat climate change, access to appropriate minerals on a large scale becomes paramount. The Vice President’s remarks underscored the interconnectedness of the mining industry with the urgent need for a just and gradual transition away from fossil fuels.
Namibia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo, conveyed the nation’s commitment to fostering a mutually beneficial partnership with investors who have earned their license to operate in the country’s mining sector. Alweendo emphasized Namibia’s dedication to enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in the management of its mining resources. This commitment aligns with the broader global effort to ensure that mineral extraction is conducted responsibly and with respect to environmental and social considerations.
The Mining Expo and Conference encapsulates Namibia’s aspiration to balance its economic growth with environmental stewardship. As the global community navigates the complex terrain of the energy transition, Namibia’s proactive approach to responsible mining and sustainable mineral supply shines a light on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
