How Kilimo BaNDO is Providing Tanzanian Smallholder Farmers with Digital Financial Services and Market Access

Tanzania’s agricultural sector, predominantly composed of over nine million smallholder farmers, has long grappled with challenges such as limited access to quality inputs, timely financing, and reliable market linkages. Addressing these issues, Bizy Tech introduced Kilimo BaNDO, a digital platform that integrates essential agricultural services to enhance productivity and sustainability among farmers.

Established in 2015, Bizy Tech’s Kilimo BaNDO offers a suite of services tailored to the needs of smallholder farmers. Kilimo Bora provides agronomy advice, assisting farmers in adopting best practices for crop cultivation. Kilimo Akiba facilitates savings, enabling farmers to accumulate funds for future agricultural investments. Kilimo Mkopo offers microcredit services, granting access to necessary capital for purchasing inputs and expanding operations. Additionally, Kilimo Bima provides insurance products covering crops, health, life, and equipment, mitigating risks associated with farming activities. Kilimo Soko connects farmers to markets, ensuring they receive fair prices for their produce.

The platform’s adoption has been noteworthy, with over 3.4 million farmers registered and 871,000 active users in Tanzania. These users benefit from services such as affordable inputs, expert training, climate early warnings, market linkages, savings, loans, insurance, and real-time information on weather updates, disease detection, yield projection, and market prices.

Kilimo BaNDO’s impact extends beyond individual farmers. The platform has facilitated the delivery of over 345,000 tons of inputs to more than 900,000 smallholder farmers and supports over 1,800 agri-SMEs in input distribution. Furthermore, over 35,000 farmers have accessed financial services, including savings and microcredit, empowering them to invest in their farms and improve their livelihoods.

To ensure the reliability of its financial services, Kilimo BaNDO collaborates with financial institutions, offering loan recovery assurance. This partnership not only provides farmers with accessible loans but also assures financial institutions of the security of their investments, fostering a sustainable agricultural financing ecosystem.

In recognition of its innovative approach, Bizy Tech showcased Kilimo BaNDO at GITEX Africa 2023, highlighting its role in transforming Tanzania’s agricultural landscape. The platform’s success underscores the potential of digital solutions in addressing systemic challenges within the agricultural sector, paving the way for increased productivity and improved livelihoods for smallholder farmers.

Looking ahead, Kilimo BaNDO aims to expand its reach beyond Tanzania, targeting neighbouring countries in the Great Lakes region and eventually the broader Sub-Saharan Africa. This strategic expansion seeks to replicate its success in empowering smallholder farmers, thereby contributing to the overall development of the continent’s agricultural sector.

By integrating financial services, market access, and agronomic support into a single platform, Kilimo BaNDO exemplifies how technology can revolutionise agriculture, ensuring that smallholder farmers are equipped with the necessary tools and resources to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
