Ghana has reestablished itself as the leading gold producer in Africa and secured the tenth position globally, according to the Ghana Chamber of Mines. The country witnessed an impressive 32% increase in gold production in 2022, with its output reaching a substantial 3.7 million ounces. This significant growth was observed in both the large-scale and small-scale sectors, with the former achieving its highest output in the nation’s history.
During the annual general meeting of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Joshua Mortoti, the chamber’s President, highlighted the concurrent expansion in gold production from both sectors. This notable accomplishment solidifies Ghana’s reputation as a major player in the global gold industry and reinforces its position as a key contributor to the country’s economic growth.
Ben Aryee, the special advisor to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, emphasised  the government’s commitment to safeguarding legitimate mining activities in the country against criminal interference. Aryee further expressed the government’s dedication to promoting the formalization of small-scale mining, along with implementing associated alternative livelihood programs. These initiatives are aimed at addressing the challenges of poverty and unemployment that persist in the nation.
Ghana’s resurgence as Africa’s premier gold producer underscores its rich mineral resources and the dedication of its mining industry. The country’s mining sector continues to play a vital role in driving economic development, attracting investment, and providing employment opportunities. With a renewed focus on sustainable mining practices and the creation of favorable conditions for both large-scale and small-scale miners, Ghana’s gold industry is poised for further growth and prosperity.
