Firefighters are intensifying efforts to contain multiple wildfires in the Table Mountain National Park as strong winds continue to fan the flames. South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed that aerial resources will be deployed to the Cape Town City Bowl and Red Hill to assist in the ongoing battle against the blazes.
The fire, which ignited at Newlands Ravine on Sunday, has spread rapidly due to gusting overnight winds, prompting an urgent response from various firefighting units. According to SANParks spokesperson JP Louw, all available resources from SANParks, Working on Fire, the City of Cape Town, and the provincial Disaster Management teams have been diverted to critical areas, including sections along Tafelberg Road, Red Hill, and Ocean View in Kommetjie.
In light of the escalating danger, SANParks has closed all hiking trails in the affected areas, urging residents and visitors to avoid the region until the situation is under control. The fire poses a significant threat to both the environment and nearby residential areas, with authorities closely monitoring conditions as firefighters work to prevent further spread.
Meanwhile, in the Witzenberg area, authorities at the Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services have reported progress in containing several fires that have been burning since last week. Of the five fires reported in the district, only two remain active.
Municipality spokesperson Jo-Anne Otto confirmed that fire crews have successfully contained the fire line advancing towards the Witzenberg Valley, leading to the reopening of the pass. Efforts have also halted the spread of flames above the Schalkenbosch farm. However, the fire lines above Landliebe and Boontjiesrivier, situated in the mountainous terrain between Tulbagh and Mitchells Pass, remain a concern.
Firefighters are continuing extensive monitoring and mopping-up operations on the contained fire lines while actively working to bring the remaining blazes under control. Fortunately, no injuries or property losses have been reported thus far.
With weather conditions remaining unpredictable, authorities have urged residents in fire-prone areas to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories. The situation remains fluid as emergency teams battle to contain the wildfires and protect both natural habitats and communities at risk.
