Egyptian Finance Minister Mohamed Maait has announced that the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is eager to strengthen its investments in Egypt’s infrastructure, particularly through collaboration with the private sector. During a seminar organized by Egypt’s Supreme Council for Media Regulation, Minister Maait, who also serves as Egypt’s governor at the AIIB, revealed that Egypt, a founding member since 2016, has already benefited from the bank’s investments, totaling 1.3 billion U.S. dollars.
This development comes in anticipation of the upcoming AIIB’s annual meeting, scheduled for September 25-26 in Egypt’s Sharm El Sheikh. The choice of Egypt as the host country for the AIIB’s annual meeting underscores the bank’s optimistic outlook on Egypt’s potential in infrastructure development.
The AIIB, described on its website as a multilateral development bank, has a mission dedicated to financing infrastructure projects with sustainability in mind. Since commencing its operations in Beijing in January 2016, the AIIB has steadily expanded its membership to include 106 approved members from around the world.
This commitment from the AIIB to further invest in Egypt’s infrastructure highlights the growing importance of international collaboration in addressing the infrastructure needs of emerging economies. As Egypt seeks to modernize its infrastructure and boost economic growth, partnerships like these with organizations such as the AIIB can play a pivotal role in achieving these goals.
