Africa’s Travel Indaba (ATI) 2024 commenced with a grand opening on Tuesday, spotlighting the vibrant potential and growth of the continent’s tourism sector. Held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban, the event was inaugurated by Patricia de Lille, South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, who emphasised the need for enhanced tourism collaboration across African nations.
In her opening remarks, Minister de Lille highlighted the significant participation at this year’s ATI. With more than 1,200 exhibitors from 26 African countries and over 1,100 buyers from 55 countries, the event epitomises the theme “Unlimited Africa.” The trade show, scheduled to conclude on Thursday, showcases a diverse array of 344 tourism products, marking a notable 14 percent increase from the previous year’s 301 products. Notably, Eritrea and Burkina Faso are making their debut at the event.
“Whether it’s through attending workshops, engaging in discussions, or making business deals, let us all grow our knowledge and networks so that we can fully and positively impact our dynamic landscape of African tourism,” de Lille stated. She underscored the importance of collaboration and networking among participants to harness the continent’s tourism potential. “Together, we represent the story of an Africa with unlimited possibilities. We are confident that Africa’s Travel Indaba will continue to be a fertile environment for closing business deals that nurture partnerships and drive growth.”
De Lille called on African nations to dismantle travel barriers, revealing that South Africa has extended its e-visa system to 34 countries, including India and China. She also encouraged a culture of healthy competition within the tourism industry, promoting quality and innovation among businesses and destinations.
Nomusa Dube-Ncube, Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Province, also addressed the participants, urging them to explore the region and return to their respective countries enriched by their experiences in Durban.
Africa’s Travel Indaba is renowned as an iconic African leisure trade show, owned by South African Tourism, with the prime objective of providing market access to the continent’s diverse leisure tourism products. The trade show began with a dedicated Business Opportunity and Networking Day, designed to foster thought leadership, knowledge sharing, and the exchange of global trends and local insights.
As ATI 2024 progresses, it promises to be a pivotal platform for forging business deals, nurturing partnerships, and driving the growth of the African tourism sector. Minister de Lille’s vision of an Africa with boundless tourism opportunities sets an optimistic tone for the future of the continent’s travel industry.
