In a summit held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan led the charge as African heads of state united to emphasize the crucial role of human capital development in achieving sustainable, resilient, and inclusive growth across the continent. The Africa Human Capital Heads of State Summit, spanning two days, culminated in the historic Dar es Salaam Declaration, which outlined the leaders’ commitment to invest in the development of their people.
The declaration highlighted the paramount importance of investing in human beings through quality education, healthcare, nutrition, job creation, and skills development. Recognizing that coordinated financing and efforts were necessary, the leaders pledged to strengthen the quantity, efficiency, and impact of investments in people to improve social and economic outcomes.
The summit’s theme, “Accelerating Africa’s Economic Growth: Boosting Youth Productivity by Improving Learning and Skills,” underscored the focus on empowering the youth to be at the forefront of the continent’s progress. More than 2,000 delegates from 44 African countries, including eight heads of state and government, vice presidents, prime ministers, and ministers, attended the summit, signaling a collective determination to address the challenges and prospects of human capital development in Africa.
The Dar es Salaam Declaration outlined a comprehensive approach to advance human capital development. Key priorities included enhancing education and skills development, improving health and well-being, empowering women and girls, fostering research and innovation, promoting job creation and economic opportunities, ensuring political protection and inclusion, and mobilizing resources and partnerships.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who read the declaration, expressed her optimism in the resolve of African leaders to act individually and collaboratively in overcoming the identified challenges. By committing to prioritize human capital development, the leaders aimed to lay the foundation for sustainable and inclusive growth that would benefit all citizens.
