Ethiopian Airlines, the national carrier of Ethiopia and widely recognised as Africa’s leading airline, has commenced a daily passenger flight service to Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in a move set to deepen bilateral and regional ties across trade, investment and tourism.
The new route, launched on 16 July 2025, was formally announced by the airline’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mesfin Tasew, during an official event in Addis Ababa. The executive described the expansion as a significant milestone in bolstering strategic cooperation between Ethiopia and the UAE. According to Tasew, “this development not only fortifies bilateral relations but also enhances Ethiopia’s position as a major African hub for air transport to the Middle East.”
The launch of this new service aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ broader strategy of expanding its footprint across the Gulf and Middle Eastern aviation corridors. The airline currently operates over 100 weekly passenger flights to 13 destinations in the region. Most recently, it introduced a four-times-weekly service to Sharjah in June 2025, further demonstrating its commitment to strengthening ties with the UAE.
This strategic addition to Ethiopian Airlines’ route network is part of a joint venture agreement between Ethiopian Airlines and Etihad Airways. The partnership aims to facilitate joint route development and operational integration, allowing both carriers to leverage each other’s networks while enhancing passenger and cargo connectivity between their respective global hubs.
The collaboration is expected to contribute not only to improved air transport services but also to broader economic integration between Africa and the Gulf region. Aviation analysts note that this agreement provides a platform for more seamless intercontinental transit, particularly benefitting businesses and tourists operating between Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.
Founded in 1945, Ethiopian Airlines has consistently expanded its international operations and now services over 130 international destinations. The carrier has been instrumental in facilitating pan-African connectivity and has repeatedly been ranked among the top airlines on the continent. The move to increase service to Abu Dhabi is seen as a calculated response to growing demand for greater air linkages between East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
Ethiopian Airlines’ latest expansion reflects broader regional ambitions to integrate Africa more effectively with global transport and trade networks. The increased frequency and direct connectivity between Addis Ababa and Abu Dhabi are expected to bring measurable benefits across tourism, commerce, and diplomatic exchange. As both Ethiopia and the UAE continue to cultivate cross-regional relations, the role of aviation remains pivotal in sustaining momentum.
