Sudan’s Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries remains resolute in its commitment to sustain livestock exports, as highlighted by the recent announcement that over 2.7 million heads of cattle have been exported in the current year. This development underscores the country’s persistent efforts to maintain its critical agricultural trade despite the challenges posed by the conflict.
Despite the war circumstances and the relentless clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, livestock exports to Saudi Arabia and other nations have continued unabated. The Ministry’s Undersecretary, Hasan Mugrari, affirmed that their dedication to ensuring this crucial revenue stream persists.
One noteworthy strategy employed by the ministry to circumvent the suspension of exports from Khartoum state is the establishment of slaughterhouses in other regions. By adopting this approach, the ministry aims to maintain the export of meat and offset the losses incurred due to the disruptions caused by the conflict.
Sudan, endowed with approximately 107 million heads of cattle according to the country’s Animal Production Research Center, places significant reliance on its livestock industry. Notably, this sector contributes to more than a quarter (25%) of the country’s export revenues and plays a crucial role in shaping its economy, constituting over 20% of Sudan’s GDP.
The current conflict, which commenced on April 15, has tragically led to a significant toll on human lives. With figures released by the Sudanese Health Ministry revealing a distressing count of over 3,000 deaths and more than 6,000 injuries, the magnitude of the crisis cannot be understated.
As the clashes persist, the delicate balance between economic sustainability and the pressing need for stability remains at the forefront of Sudan’s challenges. The continuation of livestock exports amidst such circumstances sheds light on the nation’s resilience and determination to secure its agricultural trade, sustaining its economy amid adversity.
Sudan’s ability to maintain its livestock exports against the backdrop of ongoing conflict reflects its steadfast commitment to economic stability. As the country navigates through these trying times, the agricultural sector’s resilience serves as a testament to the nation’s spirit and dedication to preserving its vital sources of revenue.
