The 13th BRICS Ministers of Agriculture meeting, currently underway in South Africa’s Limpopo Province, has spotlighted growing apprehensions surrounding food security and the far-reaching consequences of geopolitical conflicts on the global agricultural food supply chain. The event, held under the theme “strengthening collaborations towards sustainable agricultural production and increasing productivity,” commenced on Tuesday and is slated to conclude on Friday.
Mooketsa Ramasodi, the director-general of South African Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development, disclosed to the media on Wednesday that the meeting is poised to address pressing issues that are impacting the sector. One of the focal points of discussion is devising strategies to safeguard the international food supply chain from the adverse impacts of geopolitical conflicts. Ramasodi highlighted that climate change, rural development, economic challenges, poverty, and population growth are also on the agenda for deliberation during the conference.
Ramasodi asserted that the meeting will culminate in a comprehensive plan that is set to be incorporated into the BRICS Action Plan for the years 2021 to 2024. The director-general emphasized the relevance of addressing geopolitical issues within this framework, underscoring the urgency of these discussions in the present global context.
BRICS, an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, represents a consortium of five emerging economies. South Africa, which assumed the BRICS presidency on January 1, 2023, has positioned itself as a pivotal player in the international dialogue on agricultural issues. The 13th BRICS Ministers of Agriculture meeting serves as a testament to the nation’s commitment to fostering collaborations and finding sustainable solutions to multifaceted challenges in the agricultural sector.
As concerns regarding food security and geopolitical conflicts continue to take center stage in global conversations, the ongoing meeting offers a critical platform for some of the world’s most influential economies to collectively devise strategies that mitigate risks and enhance the resilience of the global food supply chain.
