Zimbabwe aims to raise wheat output to 408,000 tons in 2023

Zimbabwe aims to increase its wheat production from the record-breaking 375,131 metric tons achieved last year to 408,000 metric tons this year, a cabinet minister said on Tuesday.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa told a post-cabinet media briefing that the country aims to plant 85,000 hectares of winter wheat to achieve the goal, based on the actual yield of 4.8 metric tons achieved per hectare in 2022.

“Out of the 85,000 hectares for 2023, 65 percent will be supported through government-guaranteed schemes and 35 percent by the private sector,” said Mutsvangwa.

Zimbabwe attained wheat self-sufficiency for the first time in 56 years, after production soared 25 percent to over 375,000 metric tons in 2022.

The country needs 360,000 metric tons of wheat every year to meet its national demand.
